Here at Team LC we believe that a smile is your best accessory. That being said, we will do just about anything to preserve our pearly whites. We’ve tried our fair share of over the counter teeth whiteners and have had mostly positive results. However, the harsh bleaches and tooth sensitivity that follows is enough to have us kick them to the curb altogether. We decided to do some research and find the best at-home teeth whitening remedies, and what we found was pretty surprising and a little unconventional.

Baking Soda And Lemon Juice

When looking for natural teeth whitening remedies, the baking soda and lemon juice mixture is the first one to pop up. Mix about ¼ cup of baking soda with the juice of half of a lemon and stir until it forms a paste. Apply this paste to your teeth with a soft toothbrush, cotton ball or Q-tip. Leave the mixture on your teeth for about one minute before thoroughly rinsing your mouth. Because lemons are pretty acidic, don’t leave this mixture on your teeth longer than the suggested time. We also recommend doing this routine only a couple times a week.

Coconut Oil

We all know by now that the benefits and uses for coconut oil are seemingly endless. In addition to being a natural face and body moisturizer, hair mask and makeup remover, coconut oil also doubles as a natural teeth-whitener. Oil pulling, or using coconut oil as mouthwash, helps draw out oral bacteria that contributes to plaque, gingivitis, and bad breath. On top of the health benefits, coconut oil also acts as a natural teeth whitener. Take one tablespoon of coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for about 20 minutes and rinse (we usually oil pull in the morning while we get ready). All you need is a jar of organic coconut oil and you will be well on your way to a healthier, whiter smile!

Activated Charcoal

At first glance, brushing your teeth with black paste seems like something you’d see in a horror movie (at least that’s what we thought). Activated charcoal is the latest trend when it comes to beauty, and is not to be confused with the bricks used in your summer bon fires. This powdery black substance is more beneficial than you think, especially in the health department. Activated charcoal absorbs tannins found in your favorite drinks (coffee, tea, and wine to name a few) and aids in fighting against cavities and preserving your gums. Essentially, activated charcoal soaks up all of the bad plaque in your mouth leaving your mouth feeling cleaner and your teeth looking whiter. All you need to do is mix activated charcoal (purchased at your local health food store) with a little bit of water and stir until it forms a paste. Dip your toothbrush into the mixture and coat each tooth. Leave the activated charcoal paste in your mouth from one to three minutes and rinse.

Strawberries, Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide

Here at Team LC we’re huge fans of homemade, exfoliating scrubs. We’ve made them for our faces and bodies so why not our teeth, too? This next at-home teeth whitening remedy is essentially a strawberry scrub for your teeth. Did you know that strawberries (like lemons and other acidic fruit) can aid in whitening your teeth? Their seeds serve as an all-natural exfoliant and help scrub off unwanted bacteria. All you need is one strawberry, a tablespoon of baking soda and a drop or two of hydrogen peroxide. Mix these ingredients together, scrub the resulting paste onto your teeth and then rinse. We have to admit, we enjoyed the taste and fruitiness of this mixture than the ones above!
