Have you been fighting the yellow tinge of your teeth without much success ? Or wondering why the stubborn cream hue of your teeth just refuses to fade in spite of a good oral care? If you have answered one or both of the aforementioned statements in affirmative then this article may be the answer to your “teething” worries! For the starters, the colour of your teeth does not really reflect poor oral hygiene.
In fact we are all born with some natural colour whether it is our skin or teeth. In this feature, we will discuss various easy to prepare home remedies that might just help you in improving and lightening the shade of your teeth.
Baking Powder
This perhaps is the first remedy which comes to everyone’s mind as the very words teeth whitening are mentioned. It is an old and traditional remedy which has been passed from one generation to the next. Baking powder has always been one of the active ingredients in most of the whitening toothpastes available over the counter. Baking soda acts as a cleanser and uproots the deposits on your teeth by mere application.
There are various ways in which you can use this ingredient for desired result. Take 2-3 pinches of baking soda in a dish. Apply your usual toothpaste on the brush and just dip it in the baking soda on the dish so that it sticks to toothpaste on the brush. Brush with this mixture ones every three days. Other way of using it is by preparing soda foam and applying it on the surface of teeth. You can prepare foam by adding 2 spoons of baking soda in half a bowl of water. Mix the solution vigorously until the foam begins to appear.
Vinegar Wash
Though all vinegars have similar properties but where a remedy recommends its application or consumption, apple cider vinegar is preferred. Simple reason behind this is that it is slightly less acidic compared to other types of vinegar and tastes much better than all of them. Vinegar acts as a cleanser and is also anti-bacterial in nature. Take half a spoon of vinegar and apply it around your teeth with your fingers.
Let it rest for a minute and then rinse it off with plain water. Refrain from keeping it on too long as vinegar is acidic and can harm the teeth enamel. You may also add 2 spoons of vinegar in half a bowl of your regular mouthwash. Swish around your mouth for a minute and then spit it out. This dilution will reduce the acidity of vinegar and at the same time the prolong its effect and action on the teeth.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent. We would never imagine applying bleach to our teeth but when it comes to an all natural bleach, we are all smiles! Lemon is highly acidic and too sour to be applied directly. This is why it needs to be diluted with ingredients that help in cutting its sharpness. To begin with, you can start consuming a glass of lemon juice after your mealtime.
Spare the sugar as that will cause more tooth and other problems than resolving them. Alternatively mix a spoon of olive oil with equal part of lemon juice. This potion will taste terrible but help you immensely in getting rid of the yellow teeth. The olive oil is known to clear the stains on the teeth enamel. It will also form a thin layer over your teeth to protect them from the acid of lemon. So while lemon will bleach the teeth, olive oil will keep their enamel from wearing off.
Salt
Such a simple and everyday ingredient which has always been within your reach also happens to be a great remedy for the yellow teeth. Salt cleanses and exfoliates but use of unprocessed sea salt is recommended over regular table salt . In fact some toothpastes also contain this as their main ingredient. Take a pinch of salt and sprinkle it over your toothpaste before brushing. You may also add it in any of the above remedies, say adding it to a spoon of baking soda for increasing the potency of the concoction.
Another way of getting the benefits of this ingredient is by adding it to some crushed strawberries. Apply the mixture on your teeth, massage the gums and rub over the teeth. The Vitamin C in strawberries strengthen gums and teeth roots whereas salt cleans them. Do note that this remedy must be used sparingly with a frequency of not more than thrice in a week. Using only salt to brush your teeth ones in a week is also beneficial if you stick to the prescribed frequency.
